Dedicated to Innovation in Sustainability
The Thalden Pavilion is “Southern Oregon University’s Center for Outrageous Innovation.” The beautiful, unique structure features an outdoor kitchen, open classroom and an airy, welcoming performance space. The Farm at Southern Oregon University hosts programs, community events, theatrical and musical performances and other farm and sustainability related activities in the Thalden Pavilion. The Pavilion is also home to the nationally renowned Ashland World Peace Flame. On September 21, 2018, the International Day of Peace, the World Peace Flame was lit in the Thalden Pavilion, Sustainability Center on the Southern Oregon University (SOU) campus in Ashland, Oregon. This symbol of peace, unity, freedom and celebration aims to inspire people everywhere that the individual plays a crucial role in creating peace at every level. From a few feet to less than a mile from the World Peace Flame Monument reside Walker Elementary School, Ashland Middle School, Ashland High School, and Southern Oregon University. The flame is surrounded by intricately carved pillars fashioned by nationally recognized Native American carver, Russell Beebe. Students, teachers and community organizers use the space to promote the Farm’s mission of inspiring a generation of ecologically-committed leaders who promote a vision of living and working sustainably in community and on the land.
